In Memoriam

Timothy James Sainsbury born 22 June 1935 in Lydney, passed away 28 July 2023 in Portsmouth due to complications from Parkinsons Disease. He is sadly missed by his wife Judith, daughters Clare and Jane and granddaughters Grace, Georgia and Charlotte. He is missed by all who knew him.
Growing up in Wales, Tim experienced the country life shown in his perception of landscapes, interesting characters in the local town, as well as in pub scenes. He developed a power of great observation and feeling for all around him. This is reflected in so many of his paintings and drawings.

Tim trained in Arts and Crafts at Newport (Gwent) College of Art and the West of England College of Art/Bristol University. He started teaching in Littlehampton. During this time, he was invited to be Artist in Residence at Sussex University. Later he took the post of Head of Art at Weston Park Boys School Southampton.

Tim possessed the ability to depict humanity and nature in his individual perception. He leaves behind an amazing legacy of artworks in galleries, private and public collections.

Introduction by John H Clifford  (2004)

Here is a painter who works in the style of the British painters who were active pre and post war, figurative and imaginative, many styled by Herbert Read to be “Neo-Romantics”. Read says, “By nature the genius of our painters, architects and poets was always romantic”.
To sum up Sainsbury’s paintings can be seen as a true continuity in the British Tradition, which is deep-rooted and substantial, paintings that evoke and reflect our grey skies and undulating landscape and the idiosyncratic people of these islands.
